Falling The Hemlock Bay Series Book 1 eBook A Dorn

This book was so incredibly depressing I couldnt believe it. I almost cried several times, and the ending was just ... awful. And the sample chapter of the next book ("Winter's Dream") made me sick to my stomach.

Spoilers.

Bixby (the heroine) has a pretty depressing life. Not *bad* in sense that she's abused, but ignored. It's like a Cinderella story without the happy ending. Her life is a sad, lonely place where she takes care of her mentally ill grandmother, has an absentee father, dead mother, and the story starts with her one friend, her brother, having died in a car crash a week before. Cheerful, no? Dont worry, it gets worse.

She meets a boy in her dreams who says he can give her her brother back in return for talking to him in her dreams. She's convinced it's a dream but still says yes. Bad move. The more she finds out about Jordan, the worse it gets. When she confronts him, he turns abusive, and she screams that she never wants to see him again, he kicks her out of her dream world. But wait! It gets worse. Her life immediately goes straight to hell. If there's a bad thing that can happen, it immediately does (in the span of a day or two). She's convinced Jordan is ruining her life, and though it's never confirmed, it's an exceedingly logic conclusion. This from someone who claims to have loved her forever. Hmmm... yep, abusive boyfriend, check.

****MAJOR SPOILERS**** She ends the book in a juvenile rehab facility, which is basically the author's idea of every terrible thing an orphanage could be. Little Orphan Annie has nothing on Bixby. The sample chapter of the next book starts with her being caught by an evil employee of the orphanage who, when the chapter ends, it about to violently rape her. Did I mention she's 16 or so? Yes, thank you Ms. Jaeger, that's just what I wanted to read in my fiction.

I couldnt put this book down because it was so gripping but.. .horrible. Like a bloody car crash where they're stacking the bodies up at the side of the road, and you're so sick about it but just cant look away. I kept hoping it would get better for her, and every time I thought "Whoa, this is terrible" things got worse. It was depressing how much the author was able to pile on this poor girl's shoulders. Yes, the story was intense and gripping and had fabulous writing - I cant deny that I felt like I was right there with Bixby. But honestly, if I wanted to feel that horrible, I could google mass school shootings and read every detail (that wasnt something that happened, but I could completely see it - perhaps in book 2? Which I wont, for the love of god, be buying.)

I honestly cant believe this was marketed for a teen audience (which, though it doesnt specifically state "young adult", most books with teen protagonists are.) I loved Ms Jaeger's books "The Cold King" and "The Fire King" and it blows my mind how she could drastically change her style. In those books (especially "The Cold King") while the hero started off kind of an a-hole, it got better. It never required either of it's heroines' worlds to drop to the utter destruction Bixby experienced.

If I save one person the depression of reading this book, I'll consider my work here done. Consider yourself warned.

Falling The Hemlock Bay Series Book 1 eBook A Dorn Reviews

I just LOVE how this story went with its vivid details and much of the drama. Bixby had been through so much and she still manages to stay sane. And then she suddenly meets this "boy" who totally changes her world. Everything threatens her, or lies to her and I love how that happened. Then all hell goes lose when she suddenly makes a mistake that I wish she didn't because now she has to take on the dreaded future. The only thing about this book was the grammar. Yes, it was easy to understand, but an author needs to know that she forgot some words and the sentence structure needs to be rewritten to make this book BLOWN AWAY.
I got this book off a free list, and I was so happy I stumbled across it. Other than grammatical and spelling errors, which are truly the error of the editor in my opinion, it was a fantastic read!

The characters seem to come to life, they have depth and personalities that I found exciting and kept me coming back and picking up my time after time! The story was fast paced and kept me guessing at points about what was going to happen next.

For a free book I was very pleased. So pleased I intend to read the next in the series, and pay for it.

Happy Reading! =}
This is quite original in some ways and certainly very interesting. Whilst not ranking among the very good books I have read it is intriguing and worth reading especially for a young audience. Sex and language are to a minimum and it does retain a nice quality especially in the main female character. She is a nice girl caught up in some craziness but handles it so well, and this is nice to see as it shows strength of mind.

It was free and for that a great reading experience. Will I continue? Perhaps not with this series but I am certainly drawn to some of her other titles.
I have never read a story quite like this one, I found the storyline intriguing. Read the book in one sitting (and way too long into the night/early morning). I'd recommend the book. Once this book ends, you will want to continue right into the next book. Luckily all three books in the series are out. One more thing, there are a lot of words missing from sentences. There are also places where it seems like previous wording of the sentence was never taken out, so you get two sentences meshed as one. It did get a bit confusing at times.
I normally don't read YA, but I really liked this one. Very imaginative and clever storyline! I would have given the book five stars, but I found the harsh father figure in this series simply unnecessary. He was rude, uncaring, unloving -- which is all good and dandy if there's a legitimate reason for it. But there wasn't. Apparently, he was so gruff because he suffered the loss of his wife. But family loss brings the survivors together. So without a believable reason, I could only deduce that the 'crappy dad' schtick was just a device to introduce more tension into the storyline, which served as more of a distraction than an addition. So many father/daughter relationships are depicted as troubled (if at all), why not bring a ray of light to this story by doing the opposite? Would have greatly balanced out the sad loss of the protag's mother and brother.
